Trip to Macau and Hong Kong with Pat and Roger (4)
|
|
On the third day (30-3) we visited Hongkong. A big contrast with peaceful Macau. One day is of course not enough, but we got a first impression.
|
The Hong Kong Ferry |
Leaving the Macau harbour, we passed this amazing row of (fake) Dutch houses. |
Unfortunately this was a very foggy day, so the views were not very special.
The bridge connecting the Macau peninsula with Taipa island. |
Arrival in Hong Kong |
A ferry crossing over to Kowloon which we did not visit |
Of course we started our trip by taking the famous double-decker tramway, a good way to see the city's highlights in an easy way.
The Western Market, built in 1906, now an arts and crafts center |
Starting point of one of the tram lines |
Connaught Road |
From the upper deck of the tram you have a nice view of the bustling town. We continued until Victoria Park.
Although modern architecture abounds, there is still a lot of Chinese, hectic street life.
Hong Kong is famous for its modern architecture
A not to be missed attraction is of course the 550-meter high Victoria Peak, which can be reached by the Peak Tram, a funicular railway. A pity that it was so misty.
In the Peak Tram |
View from the Peak |
Misty skyscrapers |
Because of the fog, we did not spend too much time up. Next we visited Hongkong park, completely man-made with an artificial waterfall.
View from the Peak in southern direction |
The Hong Kong park |
Concerned about the bird flu |
A few architectural landmarks of Hong Kong
The Lippo Centre as seen from the park |
The Lippo Centre (1987) is still amazing and beautiful |
The Bank of China Tower (1990) by Pei |
Before going back to Macau, we visited this crowded district, full of shops, markets and colorful life.
That was our (too short) Hong Kong trip. Click here for the last leg of our trip.
