| Trip to Lata Kinjang & Chelik (25/26)/8/2005
|
|
The State of Perak has many waterfalls. One of them, Lata Kinjang, can be seen very clearly from the North-South Highway. In the same region, round Ipoh, there are more waterfalls. Target of this trip was to explore these falls. We left KL at noon, had lumch in Tapah and arrived at Lata Kinjang rather late, about 3 pm.
Lata Kinjang is a popular recreation park. |
This lower fall, with a big pool, is not visible from the highway |
A view uphill to the main cascade |
Cemented steps to the left of the fall, lead to a suspension bridge, from where you have an impressive view of the huge rock slopes with the cascades. The steps end here and to reach the top of the cascade a strenuous and steep climb of about half an hour is needed.

View from the bridge down. |
View of the highway from the top of the cascade |
The reward for the scramble uphill is a beautiful waterfall at the top of the cascade. It is not visible from the highway. A delapidated pumphouse shows that the stream has been used for water supply in the past

This fall has a beautiful pool, perfect for a bath. |
 An impressive view. |
Our plan was to go down at the other side of the fall, through the abandoned rubber plantations. But first we tried to climb up to the pump house and an Orang Asli village which was supposed to be found there. This proved to be a bad idea. The slopes were steep, with a myriad of vague trails. We found several traps, a clear sign that we were in Orang Asli country. But it became late, we were very tired and we had to go back. Our good luck was that on our way back we came across Lata Yuk, the second fall in the region.
After a long climb up, we came to this stream, but no sign of a village. |
A wild-boar trap, it would be a very bad idea to step on it! |
The Lata Yuk at 7 pm, just before dark! |
This was a bit scary, to be still in the jungle so late. No time to explore this Lata Yuk. Besides, Rahim had left behind his slippers, "somewhere", expecting that he could collect them on the way back. But through lack of time, we were forced to take the shortest way down. So, we had to come back the next day! But first to our hotel, the Majestic Railway Hotel in Ipoh. Built in colonial 'grand' style. One room for three people, including breakfast, for less than 25 Euro..:-)
Here we relax with a well-deserved drink. |
 Breakfast the next morning |
The impressive facade of the Majestic Hotel |
We started the second day with a visit of the Kek Look Tong Temple. This beautiful rock temple has a surprise. At the back from the temple there is a spacious, quiet garden with a lotus pond.
The Laughing Buddha is the main statue of the temple |
The way to the temple garden |
The temple garden is a very peaceful place |
After our visit of the temple it was time for the next waterfall. Chelik fall, not many people know about its existence. The trail starts from the new Simpang Pulai - Kg Raja road. We asked an Orang Asli if there was a waterfall and he showed us a clear trail.
 Lotus flower |
The garden is surrounded by limestone cliffs. |
The Orang Asli house where we got directions how to go to the fall. |
The trail was clear, although we (ok, Rahim..) had to use our parang several times to cut the undergrowth. After about 45 minutes, around a corner, there it was, a suprisingly tall and steep waterfall! Not a big flow, but extremely attractive.
Without Rahim in the foreground it would be difficult to estimate the size of this fall. |
The upper part of the Chelik fall. |
The very beautiful lower part. This is worth a lot of scratches and leech bites! |
After this very successful visit we went back to Lata Kinjang, to find back Rahim's stuff and explore Lata Yuk.
 Time to relax. |
 Curious Orang Asli kids |
Found it! Rahim with his 'lost' property |
The Lata Yuk is very close to the Lata Kinjang, but relatively unknown, compared with its big brother, we did not find any signboards. But we knew our way now, after our adventure of the day before..;-). It had started raining in the afternoon, so we had to be careful, the rocks were slippery.
Lata Yuk again, but now at 4:45 pm |
One of the upper falls. |
 Suitable for a bath. |
Although not as late as the day before, we still had not enough time to explore the upper reaches of the fall.
 Jungle trekking makes thirsty |
 Back to civilisation |
Some rubber is still tapped. |
On our way back we had to cross a small stream several times. In good old colonial style Rahim is helping Paul to cross without wet feet..:-)
 Preparing the crossing. |
 And there he goes. |
Our welcome comittee of Orang Asli kids |
A trip of one and a half day only, packed with so much adventure. Malaysia is really a fascinating country!
